Tokyo 2020 Football Olympics originally allowed squad sets of 18, but now the number will increase to 22. Moreover, the four back-ups will now be considered a part of the full squads. It is why we will get to see Lotte Wubben Moy, Sandy MacIver, Ella Toone, and Niamh Charles, officially a member of the Team GB women’s football squad.
Football Olympics Team GB women’s Squad
Hege Riise, the Team GB women’s football squad coach, is going to have 22 players at her disposal for the Tokyo Olympics. She has already named an 18-person squad where four substitutes are also included, and they will be considered a part of the complete team contingent for Tokyo 2020. Team GB women’s football coach Hege Riise has 22 players at her disposal for the Tokyo Olympics. The elite team will receive an expansion of four more reserves, making it a complete squad.
Sarina Wiegman Might be In Favor of the Expansion
Last year, the Netherlands coach Sarina Wiegman was among a group of coaches who advocated for FIFA to expand their women’s competition from 24 teams to 32. The IOC agreed with this statement and has taken over control since then. Moreover, after hearing this, she said that this is a different idea. Hence, she would like more information before going into depth on it or offering any opinion on whether she thinks it’s good or bad.
However, Vlatko Andonovski, the US women’s team coach, commented that he was “very happy” regarding the expansion of the teams.
Even though each coach and player mostly had mixed feelings, it is speculated that this would be a massive improvement. Today’s football games have changed vastly due to the pandemic, which is one of the changes in many sports. However, all is not decided yet as with these changes. There will be an addition of some rules and regulations, which the football referee will ensure. And the teams will have to comply with all these rules to make things work. But no matter what happens, the expansion gives room for more flexibility which is beneficial for the teams.
